advanced parametric tools for sustainability in architecture

Below, an abstract of the Research Brief Proposal submitted to the Fulbright Commission to develop my research on smart creatures. Riding  through the topics of parametric design, rapid prototyping,  electronic hacking, biological hacking, with the final destination of setting up a solid background for innovative sustainable building technology design. ——————————————————————————————————————- Parametric design methods applied to the production of sustainable architecture Project Statement Based … Continue reading

Ljubljana Water Lillies

After the Palazzo Bembo Water Lilly in Venice, we went to Ljubjljana, where we set up a sister installation at the Museum of Architecture and Design for the BIO.23 Ljubljana Design Biennal. The new Water Lillies have a few upgrades: RGB LED systems, algae solution tank and Arduino control panel embedded in the wooden structures, … Continue reading

Waterlilly Venice Final Set up

Here are some pictures shot last week at Palazzo Bembo showing the final set up of the Waterlilly installation in the exhibit Traces of Centuries and Future Steps.

Smart Creatures – Progettazione parametrica per architetture sostenibili (the book)

Continue reading

In this period, the studio looks like a science lab. We are growing a strain of chlorella to be used in “Water Lilly”, the photo bio-reactor installation we are preparing for the exhibit “Traces of Centuries and Future Steps” collateral event of the Venice Biennale of Architecture on August 25th 2012 at Palazzo Bembo. Hopefully, by the ends … Continue reading

photo-bio creature (beta 1.0) mock up complete

First “photo-bio creature” (beta 1.0) mock up finished. A lot of fine tuning is required from now on… what is a Photo-bio creature? Photo-bio creatures are artificially intelligent eco-sensible organisms that can be used as low impact construction systems in architecture  to create big scale envelopes and surfaces. They grow phototropic organisms (phytoplankton) in a biologically active … Continue reading

Spritz bio reactor experiment

We are working to set up a photo-bio reactor to grow biomass that absorbs CO2 and can be used for creating bio-fuel from renewable resources. These pictures show an experiment to set up the pumping system. In the photo-bio reactor, the system will pump into the tube a solution of water and phyto-plankton, that will … Continue reading

Continue reading

We’re up with a new series of workshops dedicated to students, professionals and 3d modeling enthousisasts. We’re going to explore “Rhinoceros®, NURBS modeling for Windows”, Grasshopper and various plug-in. To see the complete program check out or new Rhino Training Page. Cesare Griffa is an Authorized Rhino Trainer.

going chemical

we’re going chemical… As part of the exploration we are carrying out on the possibilities of developing components conceived as alive creatures to populate large architecture surfaces, we set up a series of bio-chemical experiments to figure out how to push the growing of water plants enhancing O2 production through photosynthesis processes. The aim is to develop an … Continue reading

green springs @ ARTISSIMA 18

Our Green Springs will be present at ARTISSIMA 18 as an installation for the Eco e Narciso space in the Museum Area at the Oval in Torino. The installation will work as a Statistics Machine to create a constructed visualization of what visitors think about art. Here is how it will work: a Makerbot 3d … Continue reading

Makerbot little green springs (WIP) 2.0

Little green creatures are growing and learning how to aggregate themselves to create micro elastic structures. Makerbot G-code has been set up for printing optimization and fabrication of a quite large amount with a automated build platform. more… soon!

april 2011 cover: going electronix

we’re going electronics… the image features a detail of a makerbot printer we mounted in the office. we are going to use it to prototype small architectural components. we are working on the implementation of such components with electronic control boards, sensors, etc. to develop intelligent parts that respond to external input enhancing performative behaviours.

march 2011 cover

this is the first monthly cover. from now on, every month there will be an image to present the month’s work. this image is a detail of the hydraulic system of the hydroponic greenhouse we built in collaboration with Thales Alenia Space for the “Stazione Futuro” exhibit in Torino. see you in april for the … Continue reading
