IED MonsterTiling 2017

MonsterTiling is a system of intelligent components for architectural skins developed by the students of the Master in Smart Buildings and Sustainable Design of IED Torino in order to enhance passive behaviour on the external layer of the building envelope with the final goal to reduce energy needs. Each component is specialised for different and unique performances. Insulation, thermal mass, shading, solar radiation, natural ventilation are some of the factors engaged.

Four kind of components have been designed. A total of 24 prototypes have been 3d printed with a robotic arm. Each component has a dimension of 25x10x25(h)cm, and they stand together over a wooden back-frame to create a vertical surface of 110×200(h)cm to act as a demonstrator.

The passive architectural behaviours are strengthened by electronically controlled active systems equipped with environmental sensors that trigger automatic actuators to ameliorate the overall performance of the components. These equipments collect the environmental data registered during their activity in an open web database that can be used to map and optimise the system.

MonsterTiling has been presented first at the Share Festival (Torino, 26 May 2017) and the Torino MiniMaker Faire (Torino, 27-28 May 2017).
