LOS ANGELES: The folks at the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design pass on word that they’ve recently launched a competition called Dingbats “to look at the condition of the ubiquitous housing type and what that means within the larger city context.” And more: “Dingbat 2.0 asks designers to re-envision the Dingbat, and, in so doing, offer a revised vision for L.A. itself.” Dingalings can find out more about the competition via the official website. The proposal is based on the idea that hyper customized Dingbat apartments units can be ordered thru aweb application, be assembled in a factory workshop and delivered for the client on a specific “skeletonstructure” in the Dingbat 2.0 area.
The urban system is based on the division of the area in 44 lots (45’x60’) organized along a Central Alleyand two driveways backyards. Each lot can host a maximum of three Dingbat 2.0 single units. On the twosides of the Central Alley, two “skeleton structures” raise from the lots grid, defining the space for eachDingbat apartment unit to be plugged-in. The driveways backyards run under these structures. The CentralAlley is the main road of the system, while the two backyards driveways allows to access by car to the fourparking places provided to every single lot.At the beginning of the process, the “skeleton structures” are void. They get full with Dingbat Apartmentsdelivered directly on site after been ordered by the clients, and fabricated in workshops.
SINGLE UNIT CONFIGURATION APP
The Dingbat 2.0 web application is conceived as a complete configuration system in which the client canchoose the location of its Apartment, the dimension (SMLXL), number of rooms, shape (box or smooth),materials and even decorative patterns. The system allows for 110 different apartment configurations, eachof which can be finished in a number of materials and patterns. The number of different final Apartmentsunits is potentially endless. At the end of the configuration process, the application offers the opportunityto “save”, “modify”, ”restart” or “order” directly the single Dingbat unit. When ordered, the single unit ismanufactured in workshop, and delivered on site fully assembled, to be plugged in the skeleton structure.Such a system allows for a combination of a number of fully customized units, creating a very differentiatedhouse-scape within a typological integrity.
